If you're new to the industry and are working under close supervision, you can start with the Red CSCS Trained Operator Card. To obtain a Red Card, you will need to complete the appropriate NPORS training, pass the relevant assessments and have completed the relevant CSCS Health & Safety touchscreen test within the last 2 years. The Red Card is a temporary, entry-level card and will be valid for 2 years.
For workers who have achieved a basic level of competence in their chosen skill or trade, the Blue CSCS Competent Operator Card is the next step. To obtain a Blue Card, you will need to successfully complete a relevant NVQ Plant training course within 2 years of achieving the Red Card. This card will then be valid for 5 years.
It's worth noting that due to the Red Card being a temporary card, it cannot be renewed, so delegates should aim to progress onto the Blue Card before the Red Card expires. To apply and achieve your CSCS card, you will need to provide evidence of your NPORS training and assessment, as well as proof of your identity.
Despite not being a legal requirement, the benefits of CSCS cards speak for themselves. They provide proof of a worker's qualifications and competence in their chosen skill or trade, giving employers confidence in their ability to perform their job safely and efficiently. CSCS cardholders are also more likely to be considered for work by construction companies, as the vast majority now require workers to hold a CSCS card. Furthermore, since the introduction of the of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme in 1995, the amount of injuries and fatalities on job sites has dramatically decreased due to the quality of training, skills, knowledge and preparation being given to those working towards achieving a CSCS card.
