Overview

Through a combination of theory and practical learning, anyone attending this NPORS Appointed Person training course will leave with a solid understanding of how to design safe lifting plans and work in accordance with UK legislation and safety standards. In the lifting industry, an Appointed Person plays a vital role in ensuring a safe working environment and are responsible for the planning and implementation of safe lifting systems.

At the end of this NPORS course, delegates who successfully pass both theory and practical elements will receive an NPORS Operator Card, which is valid for three years.  Should you require the NPORS/CSCS Card (NPORS Red Trained Operators Card), you must confirm at the time of booking and provide evidence that the CSCS HSE Operatives touch screen test has been completed within the last two years.

Objectives

By the end of this NPORS training course, you’ll be able to carry out the duties of an Appointed Person, developing a system of work that complies with legal requirements, environmental concerns and worker’s health and safety. You’ll also:

  • Have a good overview of safety regulations such as LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998, and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASWA)
  • Understand relevant codes of practice BS7121 part 1 and BS712 part 3
  • Recognise your role and responsibilities as an Appointed Person
  • Understand and identify a range of worksite hazards
  • Recognise the various roles and responsibilities of your fellow workers: crane operators, slinger signallers, crane erector, lift supervisor, etc
  • Identify various types of crane, their functions and limitations
  • Demonstrate how to calculate point loadings and outrigger loadings
  • Understand spreader mat types and sizes
  • Plan an area with exclusion zones for a range of lifting operations
  • Carry out risk assessments
  • Create lift plans and duty charts
  • Construct a safe system of work
  • Understand Rated Capacity Indicators (RCI’s) and Safe Working Loads (SWL)
  • Identify correct lifting accessories for a range of lifting operations
  • Understand crane stability, types of load and centres of gravity

Assessment

At the end of the course, delegates are required to complete a written test paper, risk assessment, method statement and practical test. If successful, you’ll be awarded the traditional NPORS Operator Card, which is valid for three years. 

Should you require the NPORS/CSCS Card (NPORS Red Trained Operators Card), you must confirm at the time of booking and provide evidence that you’ve completed the CSCS HSE Operatives touch screen test within the last two years. 

The NPORS Red card will be valid for two years and prior to the card expiry you'll need to register for a relevant plant NVQ. After successfully completing your NVQ, you’ll be issued with a blue Competent Operators Card, which is valid for five years.

Prerequisites

A good understanding of spoken and written English will be necessary in order to attend and complete the course successfully.
