The Importance of CITB SMSTS & NVQ Level 6 Qualifications - Easybook Training

Within the construction industry, qualifications are extremely significant not just for yourself on an individual level, but also for businesses when recruiting. Qualifications demonstrate to employers that as well as being capable of doing the job, you also have the knowledge and expertise to complete tasks professionally, efficiently, and safely.

The value of qualifications becomes even more important as you advance in your field. There's a lot to consider when selecting what's best for you and your career, with NVQ levels 3, 4, and 6, as well as CITB SSSTS and SMSTS. Of course, depending on your current position, there may be certain limitations as to what qualifications you can complete. For example, you would not be able to take the NVQ Level 6 without already working as a construction site manager.

To become a site manager, the completion of the CITB SMSTS is required. The natural progression on from this, whilst being a site manager, is the NVQ Level 6, which enables delegates to go on to receive their CSCS Black Manager card, opening many doors within the construction industry.

What is CITB SMSTS & Why Do I Need It?

SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme which requires delegates to take a 5 day course (or 2-day refresher) developed for site managers, site agents, and others who are or will be in charge of planning, coordinating, overseeing, managing, and administering groups of workers or a workforce. The relevance of risk analysis in the workplace is emphasised throughout the SMSTS course, as well as the application of essential control mechanisms and proper communication, in order to maintain a workplace health and safety culture. The course also delves into applicable regulations as well as other factors that could affect a safe working environment within construction, building, and civil engineering sectors.

What Does CITB SMSTS Involve?

The CITB SMSTS course covers a broad range of topics to ensure that future site managers are well equipped to carry out their jobs and tasks efficiently and safely. Over the course of 5 days, delegates will be able to apply all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation affecting daily work, administer new guidance & industry best practice, and state duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment.

What is NVQ Level 6 & Why Do I Need It?

An NVQ is a work-based qualification which stands for National Vocational Qualification which equips delegates with the knowledge and experience to complete a job. The completion of an NVQ Level 6 in construction is required alongside the CITB Managers & Professional health and safety touch screen test to acquire a CSCS Black Managers card. The Construction NVQ Level 6’s are available in two different options depending on your requirements.

The NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management is developed to provide students with an accredited qualification, appropriate for construction site managers pursuing the CSCS Black Manager Card. Those considering the NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management must be at least 19 years old and should already be in a position of site manager. The other NVQ Level 6 option is the NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management, which is specialised for experienced managers within the construction industry who aim to enhance their understanding and skills and earn the CSCS Black Manager Card. Delegates taking part in the NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management must be a minimum of 19 years old and will need to already be working in a construction management position and is designed for the student to complete the course whilst working. Should CITB SMSTS certificate holders fail to take or successfully complete the CITB SMSTS 2-Day refresher course before the expiry of the original certificates, delegates will be required to re-take the CITB SMSTS 5-Day course in order to re-qualify.

How Do I Get My CSCS Black Manager’s Card?
