WHAT IS THE SSSTS REFRESHER COURSE?

People who currently hold an SSSTS certificate which is close to expiry are required to undertake a SSSTS Refresher course. This is to ensure that all Site Supervisor training is up-to-date with current legislation.

The SSSTS course lasts for five years once completed, after which the SSSTS refresher course is required to remain certified in this area. The SSSTS Refresher is a one day course which lasts for a further five years once completed. Anyone holding an SSSTS certificate is required to update their skills and knowledge in line with current legislation. Five years is a long time in the construction industry meaning there are lots of legislation changes. It is important that delegates remain up-to-date.

The SSSTS Refresher covers a wide range of topics which may have been affected by changes to procedure since the original supervisor safety course was undertaken.

What will I learn through SSSTS Refresher Course?

The SSSTS Refresher course aims to teach candidates various tasks including:

• How to manage health and safety on site in accordance with legal provisions
• Understand legal, moral and social obligations to maintain a healthy and safe site
• Identify and avoid potential site hazards
• Prepare method statements, risk assessments and other requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act

With these objectives in mind, the SSSTS Refresher training covers the following:

• Legislation updates
• Current enforcement priorities / HSE / Environment
• Fire risks and emergency procedures and reporting.
• Best practice updates:-
• Noise and vibration
• Dermatitis
• Asbestos
• Drugs and alcohol
• Stress factors
• Dynamic risk assessment procedures
• Hazardous substances
• Work at height
• Manual handling
• Tool box talks

Each of the topics are subject to change so need to be reviewed after five years to update delegate knowledge.

How long does the SSSTS Refresher course take?

The SSSTS Refresher only takes one day to complete as it simply updates the delegates health and safety knowledge.

Can I take the SSSTS Refresher?

Only delegates who already hold a current Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme certificate and are able to show proof of their completion of the 2 day SSSTS course are eligible to take the SSSTS refresher course.

What will I gain from taking the SSSTS Refresher training?

On successful completion of the SSSTS Refresher training course delegates will be able to:

• Understand common problems within the construction industry and within their role.
• Have an understanding of the current structure of health and safety law
• Identify how their supervisory role fits in with the manager in controlling the site safely
• Carry out site inductions, briefings, tool box talks and understand the need for method statements
• Improve communication routes within site activities

At the end of this SSSTS refresher course delegates are required to fill in a multiple choice assessment. If successfully completed; students will be awarded a new SSSTS certificate which is valid for a further five years.

If you are a site supervisor and your Site Supervisor Training certificate is about to expire, make sure you book in for a SSSTS Refresher course in time. Failure to attend the refresher course before expiry of the existing SSSTS certificate will result in the delegate having to re-take the whole 2 day SSSTS course.
