Boost Safety and Reduce Risk: Why You Need to Book a CITB SMSTS Training Course

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) works with the construction industry to encourage training and help develop a safe, professional and qualified workforce. One of the ways they do this is through the Site Manager Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)  - a certification that construction employers and site managers must take every five years.

Through our trusted supplier network, Easybook Training offers two CITB SMSTS courses: CITB SMSTS 5-day course and the CITB SMSTS Refresher 2-day course. These are available regularly and in both a classroom setting or via instructor-led remote learning.

CITB SMSTS Course

The 5-day SMSTS training course is for site managers, site agents and anyone who is, or is likely to be, responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff and a workforce. It provides comprehensive training in how to work safely in the building, construction and civil engineering industries, including the need for risk assessments, control measures and effective communication or health and safety practices and culture.

At the end of the 5-day course, successful candidates receive a CITB SMSTS certificate, which is valid for 5 years.

CITB SMSTS Refresher Course

The 2-day CITB SMSTS refresher training course must be taken either after the first five years of having a 5 day SMSTS certificate or five years after the previous refresher 2 day course. Legislation can change quickly within the construction industry and the refresher course will include any updated developments, legislation and best practice. It also builds on the previous years’ site experience gained by developing managerial skills and reinforcing the need for compliance.

SMSTS Qualification Benefits

While it’s not a legal requirement for site managers to hold the CITB SMSTS qualification, most sites won’t hire or promote without one. Other advantages for both individuals and businesses include:

  • Increased career opportunities:  SMSTS training is widely recognised in the construction industry. Having this qualification demonstrates your commitment to safety and gives you a competitive edge when applying for site manager or supervisor roles.
  • Enhanced safety knowledge: this course teaches you with in-depth knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations and best practices specific to construction sites. This Site Manager Safety Training Scheme course gives you the confidence you to make informed decisions and create a safer working environment. When you have a thorough understanding of safety protocols, you'll feel better able to handle safety challenges on the job, which can lead to better decision-making and improved communication with your team.
  • Reduced risk of accidents:  proper safety training directly translates to fewer accidents and injuries on site. This not only benefits worker wellbeing but also reduces costs associated with accidents and downtime.
  • Compliance with regulations: SMSTS qualifications mean you're up-to-date on the latest health and safety regulations, keeping your site compliant and avoiding legal repercussions.

If your employer is registered with CITB, they can apply for a grant towards the cost of the SMSTS courses. These need to be applied for directly with CITB.
