Overview

The CPCS A62 Crane Supervisor course is designed to help those who need to carry out the duties of a crane supervisor.  At the end of training, successful delegates will achieve a Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) Trained Operator Card (red card)Crane supervisors need to understand and follow safe systems for lifting including risk assessments, method statements and lift plans; all of which will be taught over the 4 days.  The aim of this crane supervisor course is to provide candidates with underpinning knowledge and enable them to understand their roles and responsibilities when supervising lifting operations, as set out in the current legislation

Those wanting to attend should have some prior experience of cranes to meet the requirements specified in BS7121 Safe Use of Cranes.

Delegates wishing to attend training must have an in-date CITB Health, Safety and Environment Supervisors touch screen test which has been completed within 2 years of the course examination date.  Delegates with an invalid test will be required to take this prior to attending the CPCS A62 Crane Supervisor course.

Agenda

The CPCS A62 Crane Supervisor course will cover the following topics:

  • Roles and responsibilities of those involved with lifting operations 
  • Understanding the role of a crane supervisor and the role of appointed person
  • Legislation, regulations and Codes of Practice
  • Safe systems of work including method statements and safe sites 
  • Taking personal responsibility
  • Crane appreciation, including crane types, capabilities and limitations
  • Different types of cranes and terminology
  • Understanding crane documentation
  • Understanding crane stability, duty charts and safety devices
  • Maintenance, inspection and examination
  • Observing British Standard 7121
  • Preparing an area with exclusion zones
  • Communication methods including planning a lift operation
  • Hazards and unsafe lifting practices

Assessment

Learning takes place over four days.  Three days of learning are through a mixture of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises. The CPCS technical tests will take place on the fourth day.

On successful completion, and having passed the CPCS technical tests, delegates will gain the CPCS Trained Operator Card (red card), which is valid for two years. This qualification confirms a level of core skills, knowledge and understanding that can be applied in the workplace.

Who Should Attend?

Those with a responsibility for lifting operations who have sufficient experience of using cranes to meet the requirements outlined in BS7121 Safe Use of Cranes.

Suggested Progression

The CPCS Red Card is only valid for 2 years and delegates will be required to progress to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card. This is gained through demonstrating knowledge, competence and completion of a Level 4 NVQ DiplomaThe CPCS Blue Card is valid for 5 years.

  • Existing CSCS Card Number
  • NI Number
  • Date of Birth
  • Home Address

Candidates MUST have an in-date CITB Health, Safety and Environment Supervisor Touch Screen Test which has been completed within 2 years of the course examination date. A good understanding of written and spoken English is essential.
