Overview

The CPCS A40a Slinger Signaller (All Duties) Training Course is designed to provide practical and theory training in the responsibilities of a Slinger Signaller.  This plant training course is for people with limited or no experience who want to gain entry into the lifting industry. 

Anyone wishing to take this CPCS course MUST have a basic understanding and knowledge of health & safety issues, and have passed the relevant health & safety touch screen test within the last 2 years.

Objectives

On successful completion of CPCS training delegates will be able to: -

  • Establish and communicate to the crane operator the weight and dimensions of loads.
  • Select appropriate lifting tackle, attach and detach it correctly and safely.
  • Use clear and unambiguous signals to direct the actions of a crane moving loads of various weights and dimensions.
  • Determine the serviceability of lifting accessories, maintaining and storing them correctly.

Agenda

The CPCS A40a Slinger Signaller (All Duties) Course will cover the following:

  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their duties and responsibilities as a Slinger/Signaller.
  • Name and explain the purpose of differing types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories, basic construction, uses and applications, characteristics and terminology.
  • Conform to Manufacturer’s requirements as per the technical data, other types of information source and the relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Interpret and extract information on all relevant documentation.
  • Undertake all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify non- serviceable items.
  • Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service.
  • Identify centres of gravity and estimate weights of loads.
  • Prepare and ready the area of operation.
  • Choose the relevant lifting accessory for a given load.
  • Explain action required for hazards, underground and overhead services.
  • Secure various types of load to a lifting hook using the relevant lifting accessory and procedures.
  • Ensure load balance, security and integrity.
  • Direct and guide the movement of loads to different types of location.
  • Accurately place loads.
  • Arrange, use and comply with communication procedures.
  • Maintain safe working conditions.
  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures.

Assessment

Candidates will be required to undertake both practical and theory tests.  On successful completion of the CPCS Technical Tests delegates will be issued with a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card which is valid for 2 years.

Who Should Attend?

Delegates who have a basic understanding and knowledge of health and safety issues, but with limited or no experience of lifting operations.

Suggested Progression

The CPCS Red Card is only valid for 2 years and delegates will be required to progress to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card.  To achieve this delegates must complete the relevant NVQ.  The Blue card had a 5 year expiry and is renewable.

CPCS - Construction Plant Competence Scheme

Prerequisites

In order to confirm your registration, you are required to provide the following information:

  • Existing CSCS Card Number
  • NI Number
  • Date of Birth
  • Home Address

Candidates MUST have an in-date CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives Touch Screen Test which has been completed within 2 years of the course examination date. A good understanding of written and spoken English is essential.
