Overview

This City & Guilds accredited 18th Edition Regulations course will ensure those attending are up-to-date with the latest industry regulations on wiring and the safe use and operation of electrical equipment and systems.

The 18th Edition will be live from July 2018 and every installation from January 2019 will need to be designed in line with the 18th Edition wiring regulations.

A basic understanding of electrical principles is recommended in order to be successful on this City & Guilds course.

Objectives

This City & Guilds training course is aimed at practicing electricians, electrical contractors and those who need to have a good working knowledge of BS 7671. On completion, candidates will have a greater understanding and compliance with legislation.

Changes for 18th Edition include:

  • Protection against over-voltages - Clause 443 is likely to be overhauled.
  • Protection against fire - Chapter 42 will be updated with extra information on arc fault detection.
  • Electrical embedded heating - Section 753 will be extended to include embedded electrical heating systems for surface heating, and will include de-icing and frost prevention systems.
  • Energy efficiency - there will be a new section covering energy efficiency.

Agenda

The 18th Edition course is very similar to the 17th Edition course but with some changes and updates. Candidates need to remember that wiring regulation courses are focused on how to reference the latest regulations on the job; they are not designed to teach you every regulation in the book.

Key topics covered on this City & Guilds course include:

  • Scope, object and fundamental principles
  • Terminology used for electrical installations
  • Assessment of the installation that has to be carried out
  • Protection against electric shock, short circuit currents and overloads
  • Selection and erection of equipment
  • Inspection and testing
  • Isolation, switching and sizing conductors
  • Special installations or locations
  • An outline of the rules for inspection and testing

Assessment

The course is theory based and candidates will get hands-on practice in the classroom and real-life examples. At the end of the three days, candidates will need to complete an online multiple choice exam to gain their certificate. The exam is 'open book', which means that those taking the exam will be able to look up wiring regs and refer to the 18th Edition book during the exam process.

Who Should Attend?

Practicing electricians and domestic installers; candidates should have knowledge of electrical installation and electrical science.

This course is also popular with allied professionals such as contracts managers, designers, electrical engineers, consultants, surveyors, and other related trades needing to update and enhance their understanding of the IEE Wiring Regulations
